Upload Your First Schedule
Available in: All plans
Last updated: 26-Feb-2026
Overview
This tutorial walks you through importing a schedule file for the first time. You will upload a Primavera P6 (.xer) or Microsoft Project (.mpp / .xml) file, walk through the Import Wizard, and end up with a project ready to analyze.
Client-side processing — Your file is parsed entirely in your browser. No data is uploaded to any server.
Prerequisites
- A Kazinex account (free trial or paid)
- A schedule file in one of these formats:
- Primavera P6
.xerfile - Microsoft Project
.mppfile (converted to XML) or.xml(MSPDI format)
- Primavera P6
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 — Open the Schedule Management Tool
From your dashboard, click the Launch Tool button. This opens the Kazinex workspace with the Projects tab selected.
Step 2 — Upload Your File
You have two ways to upload:
- Drag and drop — Drag your file directly onto the upload zone in the center of the Projects tab
- Click to browse — Click the upload area and select your file from the file picker
Kazinex accepts .xer, .mpp, and .xml files. The platform detects the format automatically.
Step 3 — Walk Through the Import Wizard
After you select a file, the 7-step Import Wizard opens. Each step lets you review and confirm what was parsed from your file:
| Step | Name | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Upload | File is read and parsing begins |
| 2 | Setup | Confirm project name, ID, and configuration |
| 3 | Extraction | Watch the parsing progress bar |
| 4 | Preview | Review a summary of parsed data (activity count, relationship count, etc.) |
| 5 | Activities Review | Browse all parsed activities in a table |
| 6 | Relationships Review | Browse all parsed relationships (predecessors/successors) |
| 7 | WBS Review | Review the Work Breakdown Structure tree |
If your file contains resources, an additional Resources Review step appears.
Click Next to advance through each step, or click Back to return to a previous step.
Step 4 — Finish the Import
On the final step, click Finish to complete the import. Your project appears as a card in the Projects tab.
Step 5 — Open Your Project
Click your project card (or the project name in table view) to open it. The Activities tab loads, showing all activities in a data grid with the Gantt chart alongside.
What to Do Next
After your first import, try these actions:
- Mark your schedule as Current — This designates it as the latest version
- Browse the Activities tab — Scroll the grid, click on an activity to see details
- Run a Quality Check — Open the Quality tab to see your governance score
- Upload a second schedule — Mark it as Baseline, then use the Comparison tab
Tips & Best Practices
- Use the latest export from Primavera P6 to ensure all fields and relationships are included
- For XER files containing multiple projects, the wizard lets you select which project to import
- Large files (10,000+ activities) may take a few seconds to parse — the progress bar shows real-time status
- If a field is missing or looks wrong in the preview steps, check that it was exported from your source software
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| File upload does nothing | Ensure the file extension is .xer, .mpp, or .xml. Other formats are not supported. |
| Parsing fails or shows 0 activities | The file may be corrupt or in an unsupported encoding. Re-export from P6 or MS Project and try again. |
| Some columns are empty | Not all P6/MSP exports include every field. Check your export settings in the source application. |
| Wizard freezes on Extraction step | Try a different browser (Chrome recommended). Very large files may require more memory — close other tabs. |
