Navigate and Edit in the Gantt
Time: ~10 minutes Level: Beginner Applies to: Free (view) · Pro+ (edit)
What You Will Learn
By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to:
- Zoom in and out on the Gantt timeline
- Pan and scroll through the project schedule
- Use the minimap to jump to specific date ranges
- Inspect activity details by hovering over task bars
- Drag task bars to reschedule activities (Pro+)
- Create relationships by dragging between bars (Pro+)
Prerequisites
- A Kazinex account (any tier for viewing; Pro+ for editing)
- A schedule open in the Activities tab (see Your First 15 Minutes)
Step 1 — Switch to Gantt View
If the Gantt chart is not already visible, enable it.
- Open a schedule in the Activities tab.
- Use the View Mode toggle in the toolbar to select Split (grid + Gantt) or Gantt Only.
- The Gantt chart fills the right side (Split mode) or the full width (Gantt Only mode).
What you should see: A timeline with horizontal task bars representing each activity. A vertical data date marker line indicates the schedule data date.
Step 2 — Zoom In and Out
Control the level of detail on the timeline.
- Locate the zoom controls above the Gantt chart (plus and minus icons or a zoom slider).
- Click Zoom In (+) to narrow the timeline to days or weeks.
- Click Zoom Out (−) to widen the view to months or years.
- Alternatively, hold Ctrl and scroll your mouse wheel to zoom.
What you should see: Zooming in shows more detail — individual days and shorter bars. Zooming out compresses the timeline so more of the project is visible at once.
Step 3 — Pan Across the Timeline
Scroll left and right to navigate through the project.
- Click and drag on an empty area of the Gantt to pan left or right.
- Alternatively, use the horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of the Gantt.
- Scroll to find the start of the project, the data date, and the end of the project.
What you should see: The timeline scrolls smoothly. The grid stays synchronised — the same activity rows are visible in both the grid and the Gantt.
Step 4 — Use the Minimap
The minimap gives you a bird's eye view of the entire project timeline.
- Look at the bottom of the Gantt area for the minimap bar (a thin strip showing the full project range).
- A highlighted region shows the currently visible date range.
- Click and drag the highlighted region to jump to a different date range.
- Resize the highlighted region to change the zoom level.
What you should see: The minimap shows tiny bars representing the entire project. Dragging the viewport rectangle updates the main Gantt area immediately.
Step 5 — Identify Key Markers
The Gantt displays important reference lines.
- Look for the data date marker — a vertical line (usually blue) showing the schedule data date.
- Look for the progress line — a jagged line showing how far work has progressed relative to the data date.
- If baseline bars are enabled, lighter bars appear behind the current bars.
What you should see: The data date marker divides past (left) from future (right). The progress line weaves between activities based on their actual progress.
Step 6 — Inspect Activity Details
Hover over bars to see detailed information without leaving the Gantt.
- Move your cursor over any task bar.
- A tooltip appears showing the activity name, start date, finish date, duration, and total float.
- Move your cursor off the bar to dismiss the tooltip.
What you should see: A small popup with key schedule data for that activity. Critical activities may display in red, while non-critical activities display in blue or green.
Step 7 — Drag a Task Bar to Reschedule (Pro+)
You can reschedule activities directly in the Gantt by dragging.
- Click on a task bar and hold.
- Drag it left (earlier) or right (later) along the timeline.
- Release the mouse button.
- A Confirmation Card appears asking you to approve the date change.
- Click Apply to accept or Cancel to revert.
What you should see: The task bar moves to the new position. Connected activities update their positions based on relationships. A confirmation dialog shows the old and new dates.
Drag-to-reschedule requires a Pro or Enterprise subscription. Free tier users can view but not edit in the Gantt.
Step 8 — Update Progress by Dragging (Pro+)
Update an activity's percent complete directly on the Gantt bar.
- Hover over a task bar — a progress handle appears at the progress boundary (a small circle or line on the bar).
- Click and drag the progress handle left or right.
- Dragging right increases the percent complete; dragging left decreases it.
- Release and confirm the change.
What you should see: The filled portion of the bar grows or shrinks as you drag the progress handle. The grid's percent complete column updates to match.
Step 9 — Create a Relationship by Dragging (Pro+)
Draw a line between two bars to create a dependency relationship.
- Hover over the end of a predecessor bar — a connection point (small circle) appears.
- Click and drag from the connection point to the start of a successor bar.
- Release the mouse button.
- A Finish-to-Start (FS) relationship is created between the two activities.
- Confirm the new relationship in the Confirmation Card.
What you should see: A dependency arrow now connects the two bars. The successor bar may shift to respect the new relationship. The Gantt redraws the link line between the bars.
Step 10 — Toggle Baseline Bars
Show or hide baseline bars for visual comparison with the current schedule.
- Open Gantt Settings from the toolbar (gear icon on the Gantt).
- Find the Show Baseline Bars toggle.
- Enable it to see baseline bars behind the current bars.
- Disable it to hide them.
What you should see: With baseline bars enabled, lighter bars appear behind each current bar showing the original planned dates. Variance between baseline and current is visible at a glance.
Step 11 — Verify Your Work
Confirm you are comfortable navigating and editing in the Gantt.
- Zoom in to see daily detail, then zoom out to see the full project.
- Pan to the data date marker.
- Hover over a task bar and read the tooltip.
- If on Pro+, drag a bar, update progress, and create a relationship.
- Toggle baseline bars on and off.
What you should see: You can navigate the entire timeline, inspect activities, and (on Pro+) make edits directly on the chart.

Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Gantt chart is blank | Ensure activities have valid start and finish dates. Check that the View Mode is set to Split or Gantt Only. |
| Cannot drag task bars | Verify you have a Pro or Enterprise subscription. Free tier is view-only. |
| Dragging creates no confirmation card | Ensure Editor mode is enabled. View-only mode does not allow edits. |
| Minimap not visible | The minimap may be collapsed. Look for a thin strip at the bottom of the Gantt and click to expand it. |
| Baseline bars not appearing | Open Gantt Settings and confirm the toggle is enabled. A baseline schedule must be marked first. |
